Hello, fellow adventurers!

Navigating travel permits in Afghanistan can be challenging, especially for solo travelers looking to explore various regions. It’s crucial to have the necessary permits, as some travelers without them have encountered issues, while others have been more fortunate.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you:

Obtaining Your Travel Permits: Generally, you’ll need to get permits in Kabul free of charge and have them approved in the areas you visit.

Occasionally, you may obtain them at local offices in other cities, though this isn’t always an option.

Key Points for Border Crossings:

1. From Tajikistan (Shirkhan Border): You can travel directly to Kunduz from the border to get your permit. If you’re just passing through without stopping, you might not need a permit immediately and can arrange it in Kabul or Mazar. Solo female travelers, however, cannot get a visa on arrival at this border unless accompanied by a male or guide. For support, reach out to ATE Tours.

2. From Pakistan to Nuristan or Kunar: It’s advisable to stop in Jalalabad to secure permits for Jalalabad, Kunar, and Nuristan before heading to Kabul. Alternatively, you can go directly from Torkham to Kabul.

Permit Regulations by Region:
Permit rules can vary. Herat and Bamyan tend to be more lenient, while Jalalabad, a less touristy area, is stricter.

3. From Iran: In Herat, you may be able to obtain travel permits immediately upon entry, allowing you to skip a trip to Kabul.

4. From Uzbekistan (Heratan Border): You can travel directly to Mazar to get your permit. If you’re just passing through, you may defer obtaining the permit until Kabul.

5. Advance Travel Permits: You can obtain a free permit for the entire country yourself, or ATE Tours colleagues can assist for a service fee and deliver it in Kabul or at the border. Remember to register your permit with provincial authorities upon arrival.

Where to Get Permits: Visit the Department of Information and Culture (ریاست اطلاعات و فرهنگ) in the first province you enter. Permits are typically issued free of charge. Afghan Tour may charge 1000 Afghani for each provincial permit.

💡 Tip: While you can secure permits in advance before entering Afghanistan, this can be an expensive option. After obtaining them, ensure you register them locally during your visit. For assistance, contact “ATE Tours”

Solo Traveler Tips:

• Visit Local Provincial Offices: When entering from Pakistan, Tajikistan, or Iran, be sure to stop by the local Department of Information and Culture (ریاست اطلاعات و فرهنگ) to secure your permits.

• Carry Your Documents: Always have your passport ready, especially when photographing cities.

Dealing with permits as a solo traveler in Afghanistan can vary, but preparation and flexibility are key. Have a backup plan and stay informed on the latest travel advice.
